The facts about drug or alcohol addiction.

Knowing the facts about drug and alcohol addiction is essential for everyone.  Addiction doesn’t respect age, sex, race, level of education or economic status.  We are all affected.

By understanding the basic facts about drugs and alcohol, we can understand how to help our children avoid becoming influenced, at an early age, by situations that can lead to substance abuse.   We can also become able to recognize the signs of substance use and abuse earlier, and know how to intervene.

Increasing our knowledge about how the body and brain are affected by chronic drug and alcohol use, all of us are better able to understand that addicts need help in order to overcome their addiction.  It can’t be done independently, and that each person has a unique set of circumstances that leads to addiction.  We have empathy for those living with diabetes or suffering from the effects of cancer.  Addiction is a disease that also must be addressed with the same empathy.

Research is ongoing to improve our understanding of the effects of alcohol and drugs.  Research is done not only on the social effects of substance use and abuse, but also all the way down to the cellular level of human beings.
