What is detox?
“Detox” refers a detoxification process of getting alcohol and/or drugs out of an addicted person’s body. During this process, the patient becomes more physically stable, and more ready to begin the difficult work of rehabilitation.
Although some patients go through detox alone, it is best when done under medical supervision. This is called a “medical detox”.
Detox can be a painful and distressing process. The person may experience withdrawal symptoms such as chills, shaking, nausea, a rapid heart rate, and even seizures. When done under medical supervision, medication can be given to make detox safer and more comfortable for the patient.
Detoxification is not rehabilitation. It is only the first step, and makes the person more ready to start a new way of life free from drugs.
Detox alone is not treatment. Therefore, it is best if a treatment care plan is in place before the detox process is started, so that rehabilitation is continued seamlessly.
