How do I show my friend that he has a drug and alcohol problem?
There are several things to keep in mind when your talk to a friend about their problem:
- Never try to talk to them about their substance abuse problem when they are drunk or high
- If possible, practice what you will say with another friend
- Make sure you speak to your friend in a private and supportive place, but also in a safe place
- Give your friend examples of what you have seen
- Listen to your friend express their anger or fears (as long as they don’t become violent)
- Keep in mind that this process may take more than one conversation
- How you say something is as important as what you say…be calm and supportive, not critical or angry
It is important to remember that it is not your fault that your friend continues to use drugs. You should never blame yourself. Remember that your friend must acknowledge his problem and decide to get help. You can support him, but you can’t make him choose to get help.
