Why can’t my loved one just stop taking drugs on their own?

At one time, drug addiction was viewed as a moral weakness and a lack of willpower in a person.  This couldn’t be more wrong.  Scientific research has proven that addiction is a disease that affects the brain, as well as the body.  Even if a person wants to stop using, they may not be able to stop without intensive treatment.

Treatment needs to address not only the physical addiction, but also the factors that may have led to the addiction. These factors can be many and complicated.  Drug treatment must be individualized to your loved one’s own special set of problems.
